Building a Loyalty Program That Actually Works
Most cafe loyalty programs fail because they ask too much and give too little. Here is a better approach.
Why Most Loyalty Programs Fail
The classic mistake: "Buy 15 coffees, get 1 free." That is asking a customer to spend 60+ EUR before they see any reward. Most people give up by stamp 5.
Design for Quick Wins
The optimal card: 8 stamps, with a reward worth 20-25% of total spend.
If your average coffee is 4 EUR, 8 stamps = 32 EUR spent. A free coffee (4 EUR) is a 12.5% return. That is motivating enough to keep customers coming back, and affordable enough to not wreck your margins.
Make the Reward Specific
"Free drink of your choice" works better than "10% off." Customers want a concrete thing, not a math problem.
Good rewards:
- Free coffee (any size)
- Free pastry with your next coffee
- Free specialty drink upgrade
- Free bag of house-blend beans
Digital vs. Paper
Paper cards: Simple, no tech needed, but customers lose them constantly. One study found 60% of paper loyalty cards are never completed.
Digital cards (like CafeRadar punch cards): Tied to the customer's account, can not be lost, tracked automatically via check-ins. Completion rates are 3x higher than paper.
The Psychology
- Endowed progress: Start the card with 1 stamp already filled. "You have 1 of 8" feels like progress. Studies show this increases completion by 34%.
- Visual progress: Show a progress bar or filled stamps. People are motivated by seeing how close they are.
- Surprise rewards: Occasionally give a bonus stamp or surprise freebie. Random rewards create stronger habits than predictable ones.
Tracking Success
Measure these monthly:
- Enrollment rate: What % of customers join?
- Completion rate: What % finish a card?
- Repeat visit frequency: Do loyalty members come more often?
- Average ticket size: Do they spend more per visit?
On CafeRadar, all of this data is in your Loyalty dashboard.
