Instagram Strategy for Indie Cafes

What to post, when to post it, and how to turn followers into foot traffic.

Instagram is Your Free Billboard

For indie cafes, Instagram is the most effective marketing channel. Period. It is free, visual, and your target audience is already scrolling.

What to Post

The 70/20/10 rule:

  • 70% atmosphere and product: Latte art, food plating, interior shots, behind-the-scenes brewing
  • 20% people and community: Staff introductions, regular customers (with permission), local events
  • 10% promotional: New menu items, seasonal specials, offers

Content That Performs

  1. Latte art close-ups: These consistently get the highest engagement. Natural light, minimal background, shot from above or at a 45-degree angle.

  2. Behind the scenes: Show your barista dialing in the espresso. Show beans arriving from the roaster. People love process content.

  3. Before/after: Your empty cafe at 6am vs. packed at 10am. The bare croissant tray at 7am vs. fully stocked.

  4. Reels under 15 seconds: A 10-second reel of a latte being poured gets more reach than any static photo. No editing needed, just steady hands and good light.

When to Post

  • Tuesday to Friday: Highest engagement for food/drink content
  • 7-9am and 11am-1pm: When people are thinking about coffee
  • Sunday evening: People planning their week, saving places to visit

Hashtag Strategy

Use 5-10 relevant hashtags. Mix broad and specific:

  • Broad: #specialtycoffee #coffeeshop #latteart
  • Local: #barcelonacoffee #coffeeinbarcelona #graciacafes
  • Niche: #thirdwavecoffee #pourover #oatmilklatte

Stories vs. Posts vs. Reels

  • Stories: Daily. Show what is happening right now. "Fresh batch of croissants just out." Use the poll and question stickers.
  • Reels: 2-3 per week. Short, vertical videos. These get 3-5x the reach of static posts.
  • Feed posts: 3-4 per week. Your best, most polished content. These live on your profile permanently.

Turn Followers Into Customers

  • Add your address to every post caption
  • Use the "Visit" button on your profile
  • Share user-generated content (repost customer photos)
  • Announce daily specials on Stories to create urgency
