Best Oat Milk Coffee Shops in Europe
Oat milk has gone from niche to default at specialty cafes. Here's where to find the best oat milk lattes, flat whites, and more across Europe.
Best Oat Milk Coffee Shops in Europe
Five years ago, asking for oat milk at a specialty cafe got you a polite grimace. Today, it's the default alternative at most serious coffee shops. Many baristas prefer it. Some cafes have dropped dairy entirely.
The shift happened fast, and it happened for good reason: oat milk works with coffee. It steams well, froths cleanly, and complements espresso without fighting it.
Why Oat Milk Won the Coffee Wars
Soy was first. Almond had its moment. Coconut never quite worked. Oat milk won because it solves the core problem: how do you add milk to coffee without masking the flavor?
Good oat milk (Oatly Barista, Minor Figures, local equivalents) offers:
- Neutral, slightly sweet flavor that doesn't overpower espresso
- Excellent steaming properties, with microfoam comparable to dairy
- Latte art capability that approaches whole milk
- No beany, nutty, or coconutty off-flavors
The barista-specific formulations are key. Regular oat milk from the grocery store won't perform the same way. The barista versions have higher fat content and added stabilizers that help them behave like dairy under steam.
Top Oat Milk Cafes by City
London
London's oat milk adoption is nearly universal. Minor Figures (the brand) has its own cafe in Hackney, and it's worth visiting for the full range of oat milk drinks. Rosslyn Coffee near St Paul's does an oat flat white that converts dairy drinkers.
Berlin
Populus Coffee in Neukölln uses Oatly Barista as default and the results are consistently great. The Barn offers oat milk across all drinks, with baristas trained specifically on alternative milk steaming.
Amsterdam
Lot Sixty One has been oat-milk-friendly since early in the trend. Their oat flat white is textbook. White Label Coffee offers multiple oat milk options and lets you choose.
Paris
Coutume was one of the first Parisian specialty cafes to embrace oat milk fully. KB CaféShop on Rue des Martyrs steams oat milk to perfection.
Barcelona
Satan's Coffee Corner takes oat milk seriously, pairing it with their house-roasted beans. Nomad Coffee offers oat as default and the quality is consistently high.
Madrid
Madrid's specialty scene has embraced oat milk across the board. Check CafeRadar for the full map.
Lisbon
Copenhagen Coffee Lab (yes, a Danish cafe in Lisbon) does excellent oat milk drinks. The Portuguese specialty scene is newer but fully on board with the oat milk movement.
Oat Milk Tips for Cafe-Goers
- Specify "barista oat milk" if available. Some cafes stock both regular and barista versions. The barista version steams and tastes better.
- Oat milk adds slight sweetness. If your usual espresso order is on the sweet side, you might want a slightly darker or more intense roast to balance it.
- Temperature matters. Oat milk scorches more easily than dairy. If your drink arrives too hot, it may taste chalky. Ask for it at regular (not extra-hot) temperature.
- Not all oat milks are equal. Oatly Barista, Minor Figures, and Califia Farms Barista are the gold standard. Cheap supermarket oat milk can taste watery and separate in espresso.
The Environmental Angle
Oat milk produces roughly 80% less CO2 than dairy milk and uses 60% less energy to produce. It also requires significantly less water than almond milk. For environmentally conscious coffee drinkers, oat milk is the clear winner.
